German authorities said the July 25 vehicle ramming and stabbing near Berlin's Pride festival was being investigated as an extremist attack. One person was killed and dozens were injured.

Police identified a 21-year-old man as the suspect during a citywide search. Authorities said he was killed during a police operation on July 26 after approaching officers with a knife. That account comes from officials and remains subject to the normal investigative review of a fatal police shooting.

The Associated Press reported that the suspect had previously been convicted in a case connected to an attempt to join the Islamic State group. The case has prompted scrutiny of how he was able to move freely after his release, but a prior conviction does not by itself establish every allegation in the new investigation.

Officials and established German reporting said the attack occurred outside the official festival route. Investigators were continuing to examine the suspect's movements, possible planning and the security decisions preceding the attack.
