Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission voted on Oct. 21 to block Grab’s proposed US$600 million acquisition of Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda operations in Taiwan. The commission said the likely effects on competition outweighed expected benefits. One commissioner favored conditional approval and another recused themself.

The FTC cited the structure of Taiwan’s delivery market and links between Grab and Uber: Uber owns about 13.1% of Grab, and the companies have overlapping business ties. Grab does not currently operate in Taiwan. The decision stops this proposed deal; it does not prohibit either company’s existing services.
