Updated July 20, 2026 — The United States carried out another round of strikes on Iran as the conflict spread across the Gulf and the number of confirmed American military deaths increased.

The Associated Press reported that U.S. forces struck Iranian military command centers, air defenses, coastal surveillance systems, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone launch sites. Iran responded with attacks aimed at Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, and Kuwait.

U.S. Central Command said a service member died in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. Two soldiers were also killed in an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan, and another service member was reported missing. The military identified the two soldiers killed in Jordan as personnel from Texas and Hawaii.

The latest strikes materially extend the earlier report of seven consecutive nights of attacks. News organizations have counted the sequence differently as operations continued across time zones, so this update avoids assigning a definitive night number. Independent damage and casualty assessments inside Iran remain limited.

The widening attacks and military deaths increase the risk of further escalation, while shipping restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to pressure global energy markets.
