Updated Oct. 23: The selloff extended into Asian trading after a sharp U.S. decline on Thursday. Reuters reported that MSCI’s Asia-Pacific shares index excluding Japan fell 0.3% Friday, Japan’s Nikkei lost 1.3% and South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.7%; Taiwan’s market was closed because of Typhoon Champi. Brent crude reached $114 a barrel, a five-month high, as traders also weighed possible Gulf supply disruption.
The Associated Press reported that Thursday’s Nasdaq drop of 2.6% was the index’s steepest daily percentage decline since June, while Meta shares fell about 7%. Reuters said Meta reported its first cash outflow in more than a decade tied to AI expenses and plans to issue non-voting shares to raise capital for technology investment. These are market snapshots and investor concerns, not proof that AI investment has stopped or that a market-wide downturn is certain.
